ActivityPub - turn off auto-federation of all posts

Here’s a feature request for ActivityPub: Some ability to have it on, without all public posts going out to the fediverse.

Use cases:

  • A site with identical posts in multiple languages, who doesn’t want to send four copies of the same content in four languages.
  • A site that uses posts in hacky ways to store data that isn’t really post-like.
  • Sites doing content updates who maybe don’t want all their old content syncing out to Mastodon at the top of everyone’s feeds. (Which is a Mastodon issue, but still.)

I wanted to tell the multi-language publisher to just turn it off and then send out notes with links to the content, but it’s currently all or nothing. It’d be cool if there were an option to turn on participation in the Fediverse (including note posting) without the default “all new and updated public posts are federated” behavior.

Is it?

I regularly edit old pages, mainly because some stuff got broken when migrating to Ghost.

But this week I notices 13 posts on activitypub for one posts on Ghost i had been fixing O_o

I guess the question is whether posts in mastodon should be sorted by publication date or updated date.

Have to agree with this request. I have intentionally NOT turned on any ActivityPub for my site, as (a) it would just flood people’s AP inboxes. (Plus, there is some concern about AI scraping.)
