How to set a canonical url (noob)

I’ve read the article on custom canonical links but i’m none the wiser.

I know there is a section in the meta tab but I don’t know what to write in it.

If my original article is called “Pete likes dogs” how should the canonical url look like if I want to cross post to Dev.to?

If you’re trying to cross-post to dev.to, you need to set the canonical URL to your blog on their site. If you’re cross-posting from dev.to to your blog, then you would use Ghost’ canonical url support

The canonical url is just the official place to find a page, so you would use the url of the published post in either scenario
