Tracking Pixel opt out

Hi,

The French Data Protection Authority (CNIL) published its definitive recommendation on pixel tracking in emails on April 14, 2026, emphasizing prior consent as a mandatory requirement under the GDPR. The CNIL’s stance is likely to influence other European data protection authorities (DPAs).

Unlike cookies (where you can use integration with CookieYes), the tracking pixel is directly integrated in Ghost features. The current settings can allow / disallow open & click tracking, but it would be more “clean” to give the opportunity to the subscribers to opt in / out with explicit consent (and integrate a “revoke pixel tracking” link in the footer).

An alternative to individual consent would be the opportunity to keep track with open / click rates, but without individual data stored.

Indeed. And it’s not a new thing, it’s been written in the various legal documents at EU level for many years. The new thing is that a court finally has made a clear cut decision. Simplest solution is to disable all tracking in Ghost Admin. Downside with that is it also removes the ability to edit links on posts already sent out.
