# Typepad to Ghost?

Typepad has announced that it’s [shutting down at the end of September](https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/08/one-time-wordpress-competitor-typepad-ends-its-slide-into-obscurity-by-shutting-down/).

Anyone had any luck migrating directly from Typepad to Ghost? I know there’s probably a path via WordPress, but I wonder if anyone has done it directly?

As far as I’m aware its export format is just a variation on the old Movable Type format.

I have finished a migration for a customer yesterday. We did it through Wordpress. That was a lot less headache than writing a custom migration path.

The big issue were media files, since they are hard coded to the Typepad URL everywhere. I ended up using the [migrate](https://github.com/TryGhost/migrate/tree/main/packages/mg-wp-xml) tool from Ghost, and then ran a script that checked for any dead links. I have then updated these accordingly.

Doable, but lots of manual steps involved, still 😃
