I’m coming up with ways that will make an upgraded membership more valuable. Having annoying Google ads disappear when an upgraded member logs in sounds good. Is this possible with the standard Ghost setup? Or would this require hiring a developer?

Just set it up for a site launching tomorrow! It’s not too hard, but yes, you’ll likely need theme edits.
It is not that hard. You need to add the AdSense code directly inside the theme. Put your AdSense code inside

{{/If}}
You will find a live example at https://www.techweirdo.net. in any post you will see sidebar ads(I don’t have adsense) but that sidebar ads goaway if someone upgrades to any paid plan.
