Expanding your social presence - Ghost Changelog

The social platforms that matter aren't the same for every publication. For one it's Bluesky, for another it's YouTube — what’s important is pointing readers to the places where you and your audience actually connect.

While Ghost has always supported X and Facebook by default, adding any other social profiles required editing your theme.

Now, in the Social Account settings for your site, you'll also find LinkedIn, Bluesky, Threads, Mastodon, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram — letting you send your audience to the places that makes sense for how you work.

Links to the new social profiles are supported in the latest version of every official Ghost theme. To pick them up, head to Settings → Theme → Change theme and reinstall your theme to update to the latest version.

Using a custom theme? Check the developer docs to add support, or reach out to your theme developer for an updated version.

Bring your social web followers to Ghost

Beyond linking to external social accounts, Ghost automatically gives your publication a profile on the social web — letting millions of people discover, like, and reply to your posts across platforms like Ghost, Bluesky, Threads, Mastodon, Flipboard, WordPress, and many more.

As the network has grown, a request we've heard from you is that you'd like a way to bring the following you built elsewhere over to Ghost, without making everyone find and re-follow you.

Now you can move your followers from another social web account, like Mastodon, to your Ghost publication's profile — so your whole audience lives in one place, under one account.

Head to Network → Preferences → Account migration to get started bringing everyone together.

Ghost(Pro) users can log in and start enjoying all of this right away! If you're a developer, self-hosting Ghost, you'll need to update to the latest version to get access to everything that's new.

If there are ways you think these features could be more valuable based on the way you use Ghost, we’d like to hear it. Let us know using the feedback link in the left sidebar of Ghost Admin.

Is there a plan yet for migrating out of ap.ghost.org? I remember it launching with a planned limit (maybe it was specific to self hosters?) to number of followers. I wouldn’t want to move followers in and then be unable to stay on ap.ghost.org if it isn’t yet possible to migrate out to self-hosted ap when necessary.

Touchy subject, but I’d have also liked to have seen Substack in there too, as I have clients who use Substack Notes as a medium just like X.

Substack notes is not part of the Social Web/Fediverse. It’s a walled garden.

Hmmm. Poop. Ok cheers.

Although, to be fair, some of the other services they added aren’t either.

Disagree. All are either ATProto or ActivityPub. :)

Wasn’t TikTok added this time? It’s not either of those…

(But I could be misremembering and that was there before…)

UPDATE

Actually, from the post above:

you’ll also find LinkedIn, Bluesky, Threads, Mastodon, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram

So, only three of those support social web protocols. LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok and Insta don’t.

Ah! We were talking about different things. I was talking about the followers import, and you were talking about the built-in social accounts supported in the admin dashboard.

Yes - I presumed that the social accounts section was where @weemediahq wanted Substack added. And I can see their point, although it does give me the “ick”.

Nice addition! Any way to position the social links on our sites (ex. Source theme)? When ‘Accent color’ is selected for the Header and footer color in Design/Theme settings, there is no padding above the social links.

Ist the Migration also posible for bluesky and my blog? I did it with Mastodon and it works well. Is there a tutorial with other platforms?

And with the social links… Which url works for “Mastodon”? I dont have a Mastodon-Link, just my handly and my blog url. When i cclik, there is a 404.

Nice addition. Thank you. LinkedIn Pages are missing. Having an error when I try to introduce one.

I am a bit confused about the connection between a Fediverse/Activity Pub Social Web Profile setup in Ghost Admin under the Network settings and the Settings>Social accounts. I would assume that our Ghost ActivityPub handle would be available as a link in the Social Web icons at the bottom of each page (perhaps via the Mastodon link). Is this a planned feature, or am I missing something?
