I don’t know why it’s not even advertised on the Ghost self-hosting page, but I have an idea…
Usually companies that offers referral programs are massively overpriced, and they just sucks. Look for the VPNs, most of them have all referral programs. You should search for the ones that don’t have it (like IVPN)
I had several problems with the Digital Ocean Ghost updates, especially when I had to update Node JS recently. It was a complete mess. And if while updating you minimize the Digital Ocean CLI, it will stop and crash everything. Also if you choose the 1GB RAM Digital Ocean it will crash out of the box (like described in this thread). I really had enough…
Looks like the general consensus is to move out of Digital Ocean.
I’m in India and I have a DO server in Bangalore which would work for me but the 1GB RAM option for $6 is too slow. While others have recommended that they could run their Ghost blogs, it does not seem to be working for me.
I can consider Pikapods based on the reco by @block who seems to know the way to get cheap deals but I am worried about the distance from my audience and the increased latency since all my customers are in India.
As far as I know, DO doesn’t allow 1GB Droplets for Ghost anymore, so you need to choose 2 GB by default. It surely works better that way.
I’m happy with Contabo, especially since they added automatic backups - I run 6 websites and Plausible Analytics on a single server and have no problems at all. They offer a much better server than DO for the price of 1GB Droplet.
So that’s probably my best recommendation, or just stick to DO with the 2GB droplet.
