More robust layout in a post - does it require custom HTML?

Right now when I make a post, it’s pretty much one element, then a new line, then another element, etc. Is there a built-in way to have a photo and image side by side? or two images next to each other? etc? Do I need to write (or have someone write as I am not a coder) some HTML with DIV and all that?
