Proza: a quiet, typographic Ghost theme for people who write

Hi all,

Ever since I built my theme for Trema, my own publication, I’ve received requests to create a typographically-focused and sensible theme. So, I’ve made a Ghost theme for writers who want their words to shine. It’s called Proza (Dutch for “prose”): one column, with refined typesetting.

Most Ghost themes are built around images and cards. I wanted the opposite: something that treats a blog post or newsletter the way a good book treats a page. So most of the work went into the text itself.

  • Set in Literata, a typeface made for long reading on screens, bundled with the theme. Times New Roman is one setting away, and Ghost’s own custom fonts can override either.
  • Book-style paragraphs by default: first-line indents, no gaps, justified and hyphenated. If that’s not your thing, switch to spaced paragraphs and ragged right in the theme settings.
  • Proper OpenType: kerning, ligatures, old-style figures in prose, lining figures in dates, and real small caps for labels and acronyms.
  • A comfortable measure of about 65 characters per line, on phones, tablets and desktops.

  • Light and dark, following each reader’s device, or fixed in the settings. Your accent colour is used as you picked it, and lightened just enough in dark mode to stay readable.
  • Post lists by year, with excerpts under each title and featured posts marked with an asterisk.
  • Members ready: sign-up on the home page and after each post, a paywall for members-only posts, plus comments, search and Portal.
  • Every Ghost editor card styled, with English and Dutch included and everything translatable.

I’d love feedback, especially from people who write long-form or send newsletters. If you’re not convinced, what would make you switch?
