Read a newsletter by logging in with username/password

I subscribe to a newsletter that migrated from Beehiiv. One of the most frustrating things about Beehiiv was having to get a login link emailed to me instead of being able to login with a username and password. Anything that makes me switch screens/apps/etc makes it more likely for me never to log in. Ghost used to have a username and password login. What happened to that?

Ghost only has username/password login for staff accounts. It never supported username/password login for members.

Just to add to Vikas’ reply - once your site visitors get logged in, they’ll stay logged in, unless they clear cache or switch browsers.

My mistake, that must have been what I was thinking of. Beehiiv required a link every time, and I remembered Ghost not requiring the link every time.

Ghost has always sent an email for users.

Anyways, the email magic link login function is actually genius. Way more secure since instead of relying on a password that could get leaked, it’s tied directly to the email inbox you register with.

Yes, as long as the process to read a daily newsletter is not click newsletter link, click login, go to email, click emailed link, read newsletter. That’s 4 clicks to open something that was mailed to me.
But the way that Ghost stores login info makes it so that users don’t have to go through that process often, so not a huge deal.

Instead of having passwords for members, I would like to see Passkey support to mitigate frustration to wait for an email to just being able to see a member-only content. Login experience with passkey is the easiest and the most secure one.

Today I noticed that Ghost team is working on OTC (One Time Code) login: https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/pull/24873 With auto-fill feature of browsers, this would reduce the friction of magic links.

I would still prefer Passkeys
