Retaining theme edits during theme updates

Hello

I’m currently using one of the themes from the marketplace (WildBird) on my site self-hosted on Digital Ocean. I’ve figured out how to edit files locally and use FileZilla to replace files on the server.

What I’m wondering is, how do I preserve these (mostly CSS but some HTML) changes when the theme creator releases an official theme update?
