Automations: trigger welcome flows for members created via the Admin API (or on label added)

Hi Ghost team,

I’m using the new Automations beta for my welcome sequence. It’s great, thank you.

One gap: members created through the Admin API never enter the free-member welcome flow. That includes every social sign-in integration (Google one-tap via Trivet, Spectral’s SSO and others), since Ghost has no native social login and these all create members via the Admin API.

On my site, Google sign-ins are about half of new members since I added it, so half of my new members currently get no onboarding. My options right now are to remove Google sign-in or to rebuild the sequence in a separate email tool, and neither is great.

Either of these would solve it:

  1. An option for the “Free member signed up” trigger to include members created via the Admin API. It could be off by default, to keep imports and admin-added members out.
  2. A “label added” trigger. These integrations already tag the members they create (Trivet adds a “Trivet” label), so starting a flow on a label would cover them, along with lots of other cases.

Thanks for considering it!

Hello, the label trigger sounds like the more flexible of the two to me. It would also cover members you tag by hand after an event or an import, not only the ones coming in through the API.

I believe this is the same or a similar issue keeping new members moved over through Zapier from receiving my welcome emails. Both of your suggestions are great. Not sure #2 alone would fix it without #1, but we did send in similar feedback recently. Actually being able to use the labels for creating sequences would be great, regardless.

Fair point, a label trigger only helps if something actually applies the label. Until there’s a native fix, the Zapier step that creates the member could add the label at the same time, the Admin API accepts labels on create, so the flow would at least catch those members.
