[Guide] Self-hosting Ghost for as low cost as possible

Heya folks!

Just thought I’d share a guide I created a few years ago, and have actively maintained since then — it’s about how to host Ghost specifically on Google Cloud, where a small site can run well on the free tier.

The guide pulls together some steps for setting up Cloudflare, Mailgun, and Google Cloud (on top of the Ghost self-host instructions), and it’s basically my runbook when setting up websites for clients with a strong budget constraint.

I also share my maintenance script in there, which ever since Ghost-CLI 1.28 when ghost backup could now use environment variables, is fully self-running.

I hope this helps, and let me know if you’d like to see more Ghost self-host walkthroughs!

I ended up finding a VPS deal through one of the nextcloud providers with enough storage and RAM to also run Ghost alongside Nextcloud. It’s been working well so far, and it helped cut down my monthly costs too. Just needed to tweak a few things on the server to avoid port conflicts.
