Help with migrating blog to Railway

Hi everyone,

I’ve been thinking of self-hosting my Ghost blog (mobtownmag.com) using Railway. I’m mainly interested in doing so because of the cost savings, as I feel too limited on Ghost Starter, but I can’t afford to pay more for Ghost Creator. I have a couple questions:

  1. How feasible is this switch for someone who has no coding experience?

  2. Are there any good guides for someone such as myself, who already has an established Ghost blog but wants to switch to self-hosting?

Thank you in advance!

Do you mean Railway? If so, you’re looking at $5 + resources PCM, i.e.,

There are three plans available:

  • Hobby: $5/mo
  • Pro: $20/seat/mo
  • Enterprise: custom pricing

In addition to that, you also pay for the actual resources you consume each month. These include:

  • CPU: $20 per vCPU / mo
  • Memory: $10 per GB / mo
  • Network egress: $0.10 per GB used
  • Persistent volumes: $0.25 per GB / mo

This is more than Ghost(Pro) Creator PCM.

Sorry, yes, I meant Railway. And oh, I wasn’t aware of all of those extra costs… Thanks for the information.

There are plenty of alternatives, including Digital Ocean, Hetzner, Hostinger, Linode … and so on for self-hosting. Or managed services such as Magic Pages, Midnight etc.

All I could think of from memory, but I’m sure there are more.

I also highly recommend PikaPods as a managed service

You can host Ghost for $1.9 / month. I moved all my instances there from Digital Ocean and am loving it. It’s so easier to set up than self-hosting.
