Is there any way to schedule a post + social at the same time? Let’s say I have a post scheduled to run at 6 am the following day - can I also set up a social post on Bluesky or Instagram to go up at the same time?
I worked at publications in the past and this was normal - you write the social copy in a box and it goes up on X or Facebook. But I don’t see how to do that in Ghost.
Ghost doesn’t natively post to other platforms. It /does/ make your content available on the Fediverse, which includes Mastodon (very nicely) and Bluesky and Threads (mostly).
For non-Fediverse platforms, you’d want an integration. There are several options here, but basically, the integration gets a webhook when the ghost publication goes live, and then does its thing, perhaps using the custom_excerpt for the social text.
Thank you! Do you have a suggestion for what integration to use for Bluesky? We’re a sports website, and most of our chatter now takes place there. The key is to post to social when the post on Ghost goes live.
So I’m a bit perplexed with the social web integration. My newsletter automatically posts to my Ghost site, that’s obvious. But anyone on, say, Bluesky who might want to see that new post won’t just see it on Bluesky? They have to know to look for it through Bluesky, somehow?
Suffering some confusementalism here.
D
They’d need to be following your site. You can get your handle under the network profile, iirc.
Actually, Ghost ActivityPub server already listens your Ghost for new posts, and once a new post published, it creates an ActivityPub post with it and pings all of your followers’ ActivityPub servers with this new post. Means it arrives to your followers on fediverse immediately. This is how ActivityPub works.
But, this is for the automatic article sending only. Currently, I don’t think we can schedule “Notes”.
A little more detail about how ActivityPub works:
AP server doesn’t pull new content, they are always pushed by their source servers. Our Ghost sites don’t pull content periodically. Instead you get pings in the background for every post from the accounts you follow on Fediverse. Even if you don’t even check your timeline for weeks, your Ghost AP server still gets and saves every post you follow during that time. Because of this nature, with a big number of following lists and active accounts, it can create a large amount of background traffic. An important consideration for self hosters.
Yes, but how do readers on other platforms find you? If they don’t come across your work on Bluesky, etc., how do they know about you and become followers?
Sorry, but I don’t know what “network profile, iirc” means. I’m new around here.
I use the Zapier integrations to automatically post to Facebook and LinkedIn. It works well.
It used to work with Twitter as well, but Elon killed that method.
If someone on their fediverse instance follow your account (by directly writing your handle to search like @index@yoursite.com), then this fediverse instance will be aware of your account and your profile will start showing up in it’s search. Also as in other social platforms, if someone replies or re-posts your notes, their followers will see your notes without following you.
