Difficulty moving to self hosted?

Difficulty Self Hosting?

Hi, I am currently a Ghost hosted, but my subscriber count has just capped 1k and the next plan up (2.5k) is a much higher cost than I am taking in, so I cant continue as is. Right now either moving to Substack (which I dislike due to it not being as good for SEO) or self-hosting.

I am not a total beginner at hosting and working with cpanel, etc, but I worry that setting up Ghost email features would be challenging.

Also because I am more familiar with cpanel, etc Im not sure what jump in difficulty this might be for me to go self-hosted, as my experience is generally something related to installing and working with Wordpress.

What I am looking for here is

  1. Id love your experiences using self-hosted, and any difficulties or challenges you face there

  2. Please dont pitch me but if you have used anyone to setup everything for you I would be interested to know where you looked, how you vetted them, etc.

  3. I am assuming that the transferring part of content/subs from a paid plan to a self-hosted might not be too difficult without losing anything in the process, but please correct me if Im mistaken.’

  4. What lost features do I need to consider when self hosting?

Just to confirm - you don’t have to upgrade from Publisher to Business - you just need to slide the slider up for number of members. (I’ve seen people make that mistake before.)

You could also consider another hosting provider - Magic Pages is probably the highest reputation/best established of the bunch, and I think Synaps is also worth a look. (And they’re run by community members @jannis and @muratcorlu .

1- I self host, but I’ve been noodling around with Linux servers for decades, and even then, sometimes I spend a couple hours stuck and frustrated, which offsets any savings.

2- I generally think that if you want to hire out the setup, that’s probably a sign that you should probably be looking at a less expensive managed host instead. Having your own VPS is an ongoing maintenance job, not something you hire someone for once.

3- Whatever your plan is, you’re going to want to ask your current host, which I’m assuming is Ghost Pro (domains ending in .ghost.io) for an sql dump, which you can import into your own new hosting, or ask your new host to do so. That’s the least lossy way to move servers. You can also export your members and export your content, but you’ll lose comments, member history, etc etc. The SQL dump is the way to go.

4- Ghost is NOT like some other platforms, where the “cloud”/paid version is more feature rich. Self hosted is not throttled in terms of members, newsletters, etc, so in some ways it’s actually better. HOWEVER, you should be aware that you’ll need to provide your own mailgun account** (if sending a newsletter), you’ll need to provide SOME method of sending outbound transactional email (which can also be mailgun). Ghost’s analytics requires Tinybird in a Docker container. (You could also integrate something else, and skip the pretty Ghost dashboard.) ActivityPub (“network” tab) can be pointed at Ghost’s own instance at ap.ghost.org (with limits and unclear future migration strategy), or you can stand up your own, as long as you’re using the Docker install method. Oh, and if you want built-in image editing, you’ll need a Pintura license. [I’m personally skipping that- I can crop my images just fine before uplaoding.]

**Dig around on the forum - there’s a ‘hidden’ “flex” option for Mailgun that is super cheap for a few thousand emails a month. Last time I looked, the trick was to sign up for a trial of their $35/month plan and then immediately cancel, at which point they’d offer it.

From what you’ve said, I think you might well be happier in managed hosting, but if you decide you want to move to a VPS, here’s two options at Hostinger, where I have had my VPS server for the last three years:
Hostinger - Bring Your Idea Online With a Website | Hostinger - Bring Your Idea Online With a Website [First one is one year commitment, second is two. Note that they renew at a higher price after that.]
(These are affiliate links, because I can generate them to include 20% discount compared to non-affiliate links. And because hey, someone’s got to keep the lights on around here. Tip: If you commit for two years instead of one you get an even lower price and keep it longer.)

Thanks so much! To confirm about the slider… I have 1.1 subs and the next slider up is 2.5 subs, so seems like I would automatically be in that tier, so Id go from starter at 15/mo to publisher at 49/mo but am only making about 20/mo and don’t see me being able to keep effectively scaling my profit with cost.

Did I get that right?

Also ty so much for all the input!

@Cathy_Sarisky already explained very well and in detail. But as a coincidence, today I published a guide on different Ghost hosting options, self-hosting and managed services. You may consider have a look:

It’s on the Synaps Media site, but the goal was to keep it factual and useful for anyone choosing where to run Ghost. Feedback is welcome.
