I have tried multiple resolutions of the same image, with the default theme, as an insert into a blog post (not the featured image). It always just renders fo fill the column. Can I pick a size? Can I use word wrapping?
Not at the moment, this will be possible in future though - we’re working on it now

So, is it better to avoid in-line images for the time being?
generally yes - there are a couple of tricks you can use for a little more control though:

It’s not pretty, but in the meantime you could use an HTML line to resize the image. It may take some trial and error to figure out the height and width parameters you want.
