Can member notes maximum length in UI be changed from 500 to value set in schema?

On reflection I am guessing that 2,000 length mentioned in the schema is to accommodate unicode characters.
The use case for this question is to store more than 500 characters in notes. I will be having more of a deep dive into making this work shortly. Has anyone got an opinion if this is a path worth pursuing?
