Nameserver changes. Still stuck on old WP site

Last night the guy who held the old WP site for this domain transferred the nameservers to me/Cloudflare. Mobile broswers show the new home page OK (Under password) however 4 browsers on my laptop are stubbornly stuck on the old WP site. Added to which I cannot budge WP from the dashboard of Ghost and so cannot view my edits. Why would this be.

I’ve logged out of Ghost, refreshed and logged back in.

I cleared my 4 browser cache’s (Images and files) and did a Cloudflare Cache a few times. As usual my problems arise on a weekend when Ghost offer no support which I’m still stumped on. I’d have appreciated a bare bones support for instances like this.

Can anyone shed any light on why this is and how I can resolve it today?

I can access Ghost on another computer in the house (Not mine). Just seems to be my MacBook Air. The guy who held the own name servers can see the Ghost home (password) page OK.

Personally I blame Mercury retrograde.

PS I’m also getting the attached on my Home page in dash board. I did tick the social web beta, since unticked to avoid the error.

PS should I be changing Cloudflares cache level here at all?

Sounds like a classic DNS cache issue. The domain is opening a Ghost site with password protection on my end.

DNS is not only cached on your browser and with Cloudflare, but also “in between”, e.g. your OS, router, sometimes with your ISP…

Lowest effort solution: wait and see.

If you need to work on it right now, you could consider using a VPN or a mobile hotspot from your phone (since it seems to be working there).

Would restarting the wifi router help? Otherwise, I do need to go out and will check back later. Thank you for that explanation. helps me think I’m not going mad. Appreciate your time. Just so frustrating. Cheers. have a great day!

It’s worth a try, but not a guarantee.

One other thing I just thought of: you could set the nameservers on your machine to 1.1.1.1/1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare’s DNS service: https://one.one.one.one/). Depending on your operating system, it’s usually hidden in your network settings under “Advanced”. Let me know what OS you’re using and I can send you instructions - this might be the lowest effort

And if you want to dive deep, you could also try to flush your operating system’s DNS cache: How To Flush DNS Cache — A Full Step-by-Step Guide

Caching is a drag. Chrome seems to be extra aggressive about caching dns records, so if you have another browser on that computer, you might try it too.

You may also want to double check that you haven’t accidentally set up two A or CNAME records (or left your old ones from WP).

Leave Cloudflare in “dns only” mode at least until everything is working.

I have a Mac OS Sequioa 15.4 update pending so will do that and look at your other suggestions. Maybe the update will kick this in the butt. Thanks again.

Hi Cathy. i only have the the basics on the DNS. Ghost only.

What do you mean by Leave Cloudflare in “dns only” mode at least until everything is working.?

I’m gonna do the OS update and the other suggestions. Otherwise my company has been requested elsewhere so off out and hope Mercury Retrograde gets the heck out of my way.

Appreciate your imput. You’re bound to hear my cries of joy when I’m back in business on this MB Air. Technology! Phah!

Your DNS looks fine. It’s possible to put the ‘proxy status’ to something other than ‘dns only’ (it makes the cloud be orange, but I forget what it’s called), but that can interfere with getting it set up on Ghost Pro.

Your site’s private page is coming up for me, too! Don’t forget to make it public if you’re moving an existing domain name to it. You don’t want your visitors who get the new DNS to only get the private page.

(And you extra special don’t want GoogleBot to get the private page, as it’ll wander off and not index your stuff.)

Hi

I still need to tweak the email newsletter settings, so when it is’s done I will. I’m off out now … might even grab a beer as I think I’ll need it. Will see how it sits later.

I’ve updated mac to v and still the same.

Catch up later when I’m back.

Thanks. Shirley

Hi. I can’t see instructions for this on the blog so not sure which option to use? It is the latest update.

It’s been a few months since I had a Mac, so I can’t test this, but for newer macOS versions, running this in a terminal should work:

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

Hi all.

@jannis I did that earlier although didn’t think it had worked. I also switched off the reouter, played keepie uppies with it, switched it back on, had a beer, had dinner, watched some lame tv, and came back to my computer not giving a ****, however the Universe was done playing with me and all is well again in the world. Time for another beer to celebrate.

Site is still under password till the morning, as wanna check the subscription set-up then let the world see it, or indeed the wee Scottish village for which it is intended.

Thanks also @Cathy_Sarisky for your help. You both kept me sane. xx

Regarding the Cache, this is normal, your Cloudflare cache policies must be long. Clear the Cloudflare cache and wait.

Regarding the error when activating Web Social, it is because it is not widely available for self-hosting and is in beta, so it is ideal to leave it disabled.

Thanks.

All has been sorted. Learned lots. Website went live yesterday.
