That’s not a bug. The + and “Subscribe” you mention are indicators for signing up. Once signed in whatever the site owner has set up via the portal button is changed to the user’s avatar or, if they don’t have one, defaults to that person icon you see. User avatars are grabbed from the avatar associated with an email’s account over on gravatar.com.

It’s a little confusing because the little person icon is a choice in what to show to non-signed in people. But I get it now.
