Hi. I’m just getting my site set up ahead of an official January launch and am thinking about running a holiday promotion that allows folks to gift an annual subscription to someone. Am I correct that the only way to currently do that would be for them to sign up using the recipient’s email address?
One problem I see is that, I’m assuming, their payment method would then be attached to the subscription renewal which… isn’t great. And, of course, the recipient would get a confirmation email as soon as the sign up happened so no surprise gifts.
You’re right — there’s no built-in way to handle true gift subscriptions yet. The only workaround is for the buyer to sign up using the recipient’s email, but as you noted, that ties the payment method and spoils the surprise.
A cleaner option is to create a manual “gift code” or coupon that covers a one-year plan. The buyer can then give that code to the recipient to redeem later. This keeps billing separate and preserves the surprise.
I think I figured out the only way to do it is to create a Gift Subscription in Stripe (which might have to live in the Store rather than the Subscriptons… we’ll see) for people to buy and then create a one-time 100% discount coupon code in Stripe that they get to give to their recipient.
