DEVELOPER WANTED: Ghost CMS Integration for a Literary Subscription Site

About the project

A curated literature project, organised around thematic keywords, for international English-reading audiences. The site runs on Ghost CMS with a two-tier membership model:

  • Free tier: reviews, previews, and promotional content
  • Paid tier (~€2/month or €17/year): interviews, paratext, archive access, and discounted access to publications

Alongside the membership content, we’re launching a translation series of standalone e-books (starting with works on bodies, gender, and political theory) sold directly from the same Ghost site.

What we need built

  1. E-book storefront on Ghost

    • Embed a checkout/buy-button system (e.g. Payhip or Snipcart) into individual Ghost book pages via code injection, keeping the storefront visually native to the site rather than redirecting to a third-party page.
    • Each book has its own page with consistent presentation for all visitors (subscribers and non-subscribers see the same layout).
  2. Free-for-subscribers, paid-for-everyone-else pricing

    • Non-subscribers pay full price per book through the embedded checkout.
    • Paid subscribers get the book for free via a discount/coupon code (100% off), accessible only on a members-only Ghost page.
    • Ideally, codes can be rotated periodically (e.g. monthly) to reduce sharing/leakage, without requiring manual reconfiguration each time.
  3. Delivery integration

    • Connect checkout (Payhip or equivalent) to BookFunnel via webhook so buyers/subscribers automatically receive a properly formatted e-book file (EPUB/MOBI/PDF) after purchase or code redemption.
  4. Ghost membership tier setup

    • Configure Ghost’s native membership/content gating for the free vs. paid tiers described above.
    • Set up member-only content blocks (e.g. the discount codes page) visible only to logged-in paid subscribers.

Ideal experience

  • Prior hands-on work with Ghost CMS (themes, Handlebars templating, code injection, membership/Portal configuration)
  • Experience integrating Payhip, Snipcart, or similar checkout tools into a non-Shopify/WooCommerce site
  • Bonus: familiarity with BookFunnel or similar e-book delivery services

Engagement structure

We’re looking for an ongoing collaborator rather than a one-off contractor – proposing a small monthly retainer plus performance-based bonuses tied to launch milestones and subscriber growth. Open to discussing structure with the right person.

To apply

Please share:

*** Examples of past Ghost CMS projects (theme customisation, integrations, or membership setups)**
*** Your general approach to combining a subscription model with one-off product sales**
*** Availability and preferred engagement structure (retainer, hourly, or hybrid)**

There’s not much here that’s actually Ghost work. There’s some basic config that can be done in the Ghost dashboard and post editor (i.e. set up tiers, mark content as paid members only). You could hire that out, but you might very well not need to.

But really, you need to decide on a checkout platform, and then drop its embed code onto your site.

I did a snipcart & ghost demo a while back, here. It’s not too bad to do – what you’re looking at is all code injection.

There’s also an actual official doc on how to do it:

and, I assume you’ve found the Ghost Experts directory, right? Ghost Experts

I’m on that list, but I’m not interested in a bonus-based compensation plan. :)
