Need help with setting up membership infrastructure

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to setup the membership feature on my new Ghost page

I went through the official doc on Members and implemented the first part (“Getting Started”) which includes Stripe integration etc.

However, I haven’t figured out how to create those neat buttons for members to subscribe, like the ones here.

I figured that only certain themes support the Membership function, so I changed my site from Liebling to Lyra theme (as this seems to be the only free theme that works – or are there others?).

I have zero experience at coding or HTML, so when I realized there seems to be no option in the Ghost control panel to create/customise those buttons with a few clicks, I felt a bit lost. I tried posting some of these codes into one of my pages, but that also didn’t work for me. I guess what I need is some very basic step-by-step assistance here.

Oh, and my Ghost Pro trial is expiring tomorrow, so I’d like to see if I can figure this out. Otherwise I might move to something more simple (actually I thought Ghost is simple, or maybe I am just too newbie for this )

Thank you.

Hi,

You’re correct - only some themes support members, and some support some parts and not others.

The page you are linking to is a custom page in that theme to allow signing up, these are created as part of the theme design. You can read more about this here Setting up memberships & subscriptions

I don’t want to presume too much but I think this might be outside of your scope to build such a thing, have you thought about investing an a theme that supports this, most themes will have an example site that you can make sure it has everything you need, for example Nuri Nurui - Multipurpose Ghost Blog Theme by fueko | ThemeForest

Please correct me if I have presumed in correctly and I will try and point you in a better direction.

Hi,

Thanks for your response. Your presumption is perfectly spot-on!

So, just to get you right: Buying a membership-supporting theme like Nurui allows me to easily customize my membership buttons, add text to them (explaining the benefits of each tier) and also determine the location of those sign-up buttons on my page. Is that correct?

To be kind to my wallet, I wanted to opt for a free theme (first I tried Liebling, then Lyra). But I’m starting to feel that the time I spent trying to figure all this out is more valuable than the money I would pay for a premium theme.

So generally speaking, is it true that free themes are quite basic and non-customizable, whereas paid themes give me more options in the Ghost Admin and are more easy and flexible to work with?

Cheers!

You will still need a small amount of knowledge to edit the specific pages.

Paid for themes are usually more in-depth due to development time, but not always.
