Print page-break card: control where a new printed page starts

Publish once. Give editors a little control over the printed version.

I’d like to suggest a print page-break card in the Ghost editor: a small marker inserted between content blocks that starts a new page when a reader prints a post or saves it as a PDF. It would remain invisible on the website and in newsletters.

The need

A guide might need its next section to begin on a fresh sheet. An event flyer, community profile or project report might need a deliberate break between an introduction and supporting details. At the moment, I can handle this with an HTML card and theme print CSS, but that asks editors to use code for a simple layout decision.

I’m encountering this while developing a theme for Landcare and community organisations. The same need could apply to publishers offering printable articles, educators sharing learning materials, and creators publishing practical guides or member resources. Keeping the printable version in the same post also reduces the need to maintain a separate document.

A focused starting point

  • Insert “Printed page break” from the card menu.
  • Show a clearly labelled, selectable marker in the editor.
  • Start the following content on a new page in print only.
  • Keep ordinary web reading and email delivery unchanged.

Themes would still control print styling, and browsers, paper sizes and print settings would still affect pagination. This would provide an editorial break point, rather than promise a fixed page count or add a full document-layout system.

Would this help your publication? What content do your readers print, and how do you currently manage page breaks? I’d welcome feedback on whether an editor card is the right approach.
