Updated Ghost Pro Pricing - July 2025 ($15/mo starter; $29/mo publisher, $199/mo business)

With the new Ghost Pro Pricing updates, how will people with existing Ghost Pro plans be treated?

  • Will pricing change for existing users?
  • Will all users be automatically updated to the new plans immediately or on account renewal?
  • Now that the starter plan no longer allows paid tiers, what if I have an existing starter plan and already have a paid tier set up there? Will that disappear?

I do wish the starter plan allowed for a lower cost option with fewer members as before, especially now that paid tiers and monetization are not allowed. The starter plan price went up 67% and has fewer features with the loss of monetization.

We regularly update Ghost(Pro) pricing and existing customers are always grandfathered on pricing. Any changes to pricing only ever applies to new customers.

If you have any further questions, as this relates specifically to Ghost(Pro), please email support@ghost.org

Thanks!

Wow, that’s incredible! I just want to say a huge thank you for grandfathering existing users in regards to pricing. You’ll have lifelong customers by treating your user base this way.

Wonder if you have any plans on providing the new analytics for us on the grandfathered plans as standalone purchase or other potential ways?

I know that I can upgrade to the Publisher plan, but that’s quite a steep price to pay for a whole lot of features I don’t need  .

@gmf Did you get an answer offline on you item 3?

I didn’t get any notification that Starter was changing/losing scope - did anyone else?

Would expect an email to be honest, with change of price / scope of subscription, I think that would be standard expectation?

Just realised it tonight;

  • Paid tiers and tips - stripe still seems to work though
  • Can still edit Tiers & Tips
  • Only 1 not 3 newsletters - they have been removed

So do we think Tiers & Tips is grandfathered ongoing?

^ that, please.

My paid tier is still working on my grandfathered Ghost Pro starter plan.

Well, this definitely is a choice that kept me from upgrading from trial to pro. It was $9 when I signed up for the trial—and I thought that was a bit steep for a half-baked platform. Now it’s $15 and fewer features and eliminated monetization? Nope. It’s not even a full-featured editor, and having to use Markdown to “massage” basic features into place that are standard on Substack, WordPress, and other platforms isn’t a flex they think it is. When Ghost catches up to the simple basics of other semi-professional platforms, then it might be worth $15/month. Granted, I’m merely one person and Ghost won’t miss me. But when I go back to Substack and mention to 10k users that Ghost isn’t even as functional as a basic website, those attempting to bail from Substack with the Right-Wing takeover will look for other solutions. I mean, you don’t brag about nearly $9mil in revenue and then raise prices for fewer features. Ghost’s “we’re all in this together” propaganda is gross in light of such moves as this.

You can go self-hosted…:sob:

Why is discussing Ghost Pro forbidden/discouraged on the forum? If there is a question about Ghost Pro that someone has, it’s likely that someone else—either now or in the future—might have the same question.

Discussion is great. But the first post is a list of questions that really do need to be asked of the Ghost Pro team. The forum is not an official way to receive Ghost Pro support (although sometimes it happens). Their email is.

Glad I am grandfathered in on one site, but I just went to sign up for a second site when I noticed the price increase. It sure is not competitive with other options on the market. Will have to really weigh the other options now for the second site… and depending on how well those options are, it may mean migrating my first site to one of the comps as well.

Well Ghost Pro is to also support the project directly and the team behind it. So understand your subscription is helping the development grow

Sure, that is literally how purchasing SaaS products work anywhere. You pay, they develop. A 40% price hike is a bit of an increase as a one shot price hike. I respect that they grandfather in us customers who are already subscribed, but that does not mean that they a. one will support such a high price increase when purchasing additional products from them and b. that one wouldn’t shop around for alternatives from other companies providing similar services at similar prices. You begin to lose the competitive edge when you try to up your price to match the bigger competitors.
